This national holiday dates all the way back to the 1960s. However, thanks to President Nixon, it is officially celebrated on the fourth Saturday in September. So, when National Hunting and Fishing Day rolls around on September 23, you’ll want to make sure that you’re prepared.

Leaser Lake Park – New Tripoli, PA
Enjoy the beauty of Leaser Lake Park on National Hunting and Fishing Day. This park encompasses 540 acres, 117 of which being the beautiful lake. While there, visitors can fish from boats or on the shore. Additionally, there are activity centers located west, east, and north of the lake. They each include a parking lot, restrooms, benches, and picnic areas. After you have finished fishing, take a walk along the 4 mile trail near the lake. Then, relax at the largest picnic area located on the northern end of the lake. Your family is sure to enjoy a day of fun at Leaser Lake Park.

Locust Lake State Park – Barnesville, PA
Take the drive to Barnesville, PA to experience all that Locust Lake State Park has to offer. This 1,772-acre park has a 52-acre lake that is surrounded by beautiful greenery. It’s a great place to visit for fishing and hiking adventures. Plus, Locust Lake Park also has two campgrounds. Therefore, your family can easily make this an overnight trip!
Stokes State Forest – Branchville, NJ
If you’re willing to drive a bit further, Stokes State Park is a lovely location that’s definitely worth a visit. This campsite has just about every amazing feature you can think of. Experience everything from beautiful views, fragrant air, rushing streams, and steep cliffs. It’s the perfect area for hiking, fishing, overnight camping, and even nature photography.
There are multiple camping areas, so you can experience something different with each stay. Some areas are located nearby other campers, so you won’t feel alone in the wilderness. Others are more secluded. You also have access to restrooms (a toilet seat over a hole in the ground) and an artesian well that you can drink from. Whether its your family’s first time celebrating National Hunting and Fishing Day or an annual activity, Stoke State Forest is definitely a great option.
